My red rose

Clare Andrews | United Kingdom

This is a project I completed as part of my masters in children's book illustration. It is a story about an elderly gardener who dreams of his beloved rose winning a prize at the local flower show. Unfortunately, despite all his hard work, it is not to be, as someone else has other plans for his rose. However all is not lost as there is a glimmer of hope on the last page. I wanted this to be a a tragi-comic tale of never giving up on your dreams!
Although this isn't a wordless book, the storyline is mostly told just through the images. I have used limited words, partly to bring a sense of warmth to the protagonist, and portray his reactions to the events, and partly to add a sense of mischief to the bugs.
