I am fascinated by images created inside our minds, and how much we can abstract or hide something, and still get a clear picture of what it is.
"What is that?" is a wordless picture book of animals hidden under cloth, like objects in a museum. It is an exercise in looking at something and really seeing what is standing in front of you – even if it is barely visible. The sense of outsmarting the illustration gives the young reader a sense of joy and triumph.
