In the grand tapestry of Chinese traditional culture, the Spring Festival stands out as the most vibrant chapter, carrying millennia of familial warmth and collective memory. The red paper and golden ink of Spring Festival couplets are not just a lively expression of calligraphy art among the people but also an emotional vessel for bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new—each stroke brimming with longing for reunion, each square Chinese character engraved with prayers for blessings.
My creative vision was to craft a picture book filled with love, unfolding through a calligraphy contest between a grandfather and his granddaughter, which evolves into a heartwarming collaboration to write couplets for their village. Their interactions paint a touching portrait of family bonds, with every illustration and word radiating tenderness.
The book also portrays the profound love of a father, silent yet steadfast. He shields his family from life’s storms with unwavering strength, serving as both a guardian and a steadfast supporter on his daughter’s journey, bridging generations with the fiery passion of shared blood.
Here, too, we see the enduring love of grandparents, growing richer with time. Hand in hand through the seasons, the wrinkles around their eyes whisper tales of lifelong companionship.
The grandfather’s kindness extends beyond his family, warming the hearts of neighbors. His act of writing couplets with his granddaughter, though small, shines like spring sunlight, spreading goodwill through the village. The villagers’ gratitude and respect amplify this love, creating ripples of warmth.
The book closes with a circular panorama of the village—a symbol of harmony—where red couplets contrast beautifully with white walls and black tiles. As families prepare for the festive celebrations, the scene freezes in time, as if all the world’s beauty is interwoven in love. It conveys a simple truth: life is never lacking in love, and even the smallest acts, when done with sincerity, can shine brightly.
