“The Enchanted Rock” is a picture book inspired by Enchanted Rock, a pink granite mountain in Texas.
On my first visit, the sky was overcast and the trails were closed due to rain. Disappointed, I walked around the base instead. At first, the rocky hill looked dull and quiet.
But under the low clouds, something began to shift. The branches, cacti, and rocks—so ordinary just moments before—started to resemble a hidden, magical world. It felt like I had glimpsed a secret place that didn’t want to be found. That quiet, rainy moment sparked my imagination.
What if fairies lived here, hiding from human eyes? What if the landscape came alive when no one was looking? Had I come on a bright, sunny day, I might have missed it all.
