Metamorphoses

Florence Dailleux | Switzerland

I took inspiration in an old 19th century laying game, „Les Petits Métamorphoses“ (sic), which I have adopted as a working title. It has developed into an interactive game book that combines texts and images without constraint. It is, so to speak, a Cadavre Exquis“ in words and pictures, where the materiality of the book as an object plays a major part.

The prototype , which is only an example, has 26 double pages and a size of 18x31cm. Every spread (character and matching text) is divided in 3 parts that combine with those of other characters.

The sequence of characters in the book can be freely defined.
It can be read/played alone, in pairs or more, a minute or an hour...Both parents and children are active and create the (anti) heroes and the stories together.

Audience: Crossover. The book will be perceived according to the personal maturity and experience of the reader. Young children also like to play just with the pictures. For a young audience, the book would need to be adapted (choice of characters and texts).

The concept is not new, but the graphic style in combination with longer, partly rhymed texts and diverse syntactic forms is unconventional. It is impossible to really show the innumerable nonsensical combinations in the PDF, so I included to the PDF a chart with the texts in German (original) and an English version, and a short presentation. I hope it helps getting an idea of the book as it is conceived: open, interactive, plural.

The Metamorphoses book project was selected for the shortlist of the Hamburger Bilderbuchpreis 2023 (https://neues-bilderbuch.de/).

I hope you enjoy it.
