Puparium - 730 days of Josuko / Silent book

Fanni RĂ©ka Sipos | Hungary

The theme of my book is adolescence, and it's focusing on the typical difficulties of this period. It has become my habit to target childrenbook section first when I visit a bookstore. Spending time there, looking through almost all the picturebooks and enjoying them. After a while, I noticed that the shelves for teenagers were less frequently changed, and there were always plenty of novels to choose from, but it was and is still rare to have picturebooks for teens (at least in Hungary). An idea came to my mind, to create something for them. I would like to make a book for them, which is reflect on their everyday life and struggles, both in a mood and in imagery. The majority of teenagers nowadays (and not only them) communicate with each other through pictures, use emojis, GIFs to describe their feelings. Maybe it's easier sometimes, because they/we don't have to shape our feeling in words. I thought a lot about this new form of communication, and how it is changed everything. This is how I found my way back to my old desire to make a silent book. I thought that the it could be a good form to communicate with teenagers, who are sometimes unreachable trough words. I thought the form and the content would complement each other in this case. As this is a silent book, images taking the place of the text, I don't want to give too much information away from the storyline. I wouldn't like to influence any personal interpretation. Very succinctly, it is a fictional story that focuses mostly on the psychological and physical changes that occur during adolescence and the different relationships between the adolescent and the community they live in. (their family relations, schoolmates, lovers) My aim with the book is to offer support to people who find this stage of life difficult to experience and feel that they are not alone with their thoughts and the problems they face. And also to find their inner voice.
