Inspired by a true story, Bleddfa is a tale of how the last wolves of Wales, UK were hunted and killed. Bleddfa is a small village in Wales and loosely translates to ‘Place of the wolf’. Supposedly it was there that the last wolf of Wales was killed. I live close to the village for several years, and walked in the forests surrounding the village. I discovered this folk tale via a weather eroded sign that told the story of the village.
The antagonist of the story is a play on Little Red Riding Hood, though subverted so that she is the hunter not the hunted.
I used black and white monotype for the books artwork and played with positive and negative space a great deal throughout the Illustrations. This was intended to mirror the subversion of the hunted and hunter roles.
