I don't want to be a carpenter

José Luis Tejero Fuentes | Spain

This is a children's book project for my MA, I created it for the module “The Illustration and Audience: The Paradox”. This is the first time that I make a picture book and I created it to learn how to convey an interesting conflict and a good range of emotions focusing on the relationship between father and son and by adding some personal elements. I wanted to create a simple and effective visual narrative and study the use of light, colour, characterization and composition to achieve different feelings and ideas.

The artworks are watercolour and pencils on paper. An important point for me was to try to translate that freshness and spontaneity of the work and experimentation developed in sketchbooks into final artwork. So that is why I tried to make use of these materials in an atmospheric, playful and fresh manner without worrying too much about perfectionism.
This project helped me to communicate with my own father even if what happens in the story is not real, the story was inspired by some memories and I added a main body of fiction elements to create a satisfying ending.
