The Garden of Us

Phạm Quang Phúc | Vietnam

I had the idea for this book for many years ago but I did not finish my book until last Autumn. That is the hardest time in my life. My city had been blocked down for five months and more. Everybody needs to stay at home because of the quarantine time. I saw a lot of people, especially old people, who had an emergency in hospital because they tested positive for Covid-19. Sadly, in some cases, their family could not meet them for the last time to ensure epidemic prevention. Some kids never meet their grandpa and grandma anymore. Some mothers and fathers can not explain why suddenly the old people never come back home to their children. When I have a chance to see many sad stories like those, I want to finish my book.
Not just the Covid-19 time, anyone can also feel lost in their life when they lost their friends, lovers but they can not say any words with them at last. I remember when my great-grandmother passed away when I was six years old, my mom felt sad for months. I realize I feel sad because I did not understand what happened with my great-grandmother but maybe my mom felt sadder than me because she could not meet her grandmother anymore. My mother had a lot of things want to say with her grandmother but it was too late. I hope this book is able to share the sadness and help the kids know that, during difficult and sad times, they and their parents experience the same shock and sadness. It is extremely important to accept those misfortunes together and move on.
This book is not a big idea or a  special story but it is a story I want to tell and share. The characters are based on my family.  I hope when someone feels sad or loses somebody, they can find some reasons to make themselves feel better.
